1) Crush as many old dry bones and dried blood oranges as possible to a fine powder.

2) Add salt, pepper and a teaspoon of cod liver oil.

3) Add grass cuttings gradually to the mixture, starting with a cupful for the first night feed.

4) Gradually decrease the mix and increase the grass content of the feed over three weeks. At the end of this time they will become complete herbivores and happy to eat only grass.

Penny could not believe her luck. Surely this was exactly what they were looking for!

The old red leather bookmark fell on to the flagstone floor. When she picked it up she noticed an interesting inscription on one side. It read: The Secret Life of Louis IV, King of France.

It must have been an old bookmark belonging to that particular volume.

When she turned it over, it showed an engraving of the family tree of the King and his girlfriend, Madame de Montespan. Penny followed the branches of the tree down to their great-granddaughter Countess Magdelenne. According to the family tree she married one Count Belle Fontaine. They had a daughter called Mortia-Antoinette Belle Fontaine. If this was a true document it was quite clear that Uncle Faustus’s wife was the great-great-granddaughter of Louis IV and a real countess after all!

Penny showed Uncle Faustus her two extraordinary finds.

His big dark eyes glowed as he read the pony mix recipe and sparkled with tears when he saw the family tree on the bookmark.

‘I knew it was true,’ he said, giving Penny a big hug, ‘and now I know why you are a Unicorn Princess, Penny. You are the most amazing little girl! Come on, let’s go home. Leave everything to me.’ He took her hand and they made their way up the dark stairs and out into the early morning mist, where Patch was waiting to take Penny back to Fetlocks Hall.

Penny was relieved that everyone was safe for the rest of the day. But something had to be done by nightfall or many more ponies like poor Patch would get bitten. She could only treat one at a time with Unicorn Tears. If lots were attacked at once by the pony vampires they might be converted before she could get to them. She could try her best to protect the Fetlocks ponies by locking them up in their stables with garlic round their necks but she would be unable to save all the other ponies in the area.

Now she had found the solution to the problem it was up to Uncle Faustus to work all day to make the right mixture.

Penny and Patch were exhausted. It was really hard work to fly back to the Hall without falling asleep that morning, but Penny had to tell Potty Smythe the good news about the recipe and show the Fitznicelys the little leather bookmark she was carrying in her blazer pocket.
